Mental Health Services for Children with SED Now the Responsibility of the Schools

As of July 1, 2011, the funding and responsibility for the provision of mental health services for children with IEPs was moved from the County Mental Health Plans to the Special Education Local Plan Areas (SELPAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs). Assembly Bill (AB) 114, also known as Realignment 2011, included repeal of AB 3632, which had delegated to the counties the State’s responsibility for provision of mental health services under the Federal Individuals with Disabilities and Education Act (IDEA).

While many of the districts are continuing business as usual this year, planning is underway for full transition next year.  CCCMHA's Executive Director, Rusty Selix, has been participating in the Department of Education's workgroup developing the strategies for the transition and full implementation.  For more information on our activities click here to visit the CCCMHA Members Only site.
