Facts about The Mental Health Services Act; Also known as MHSA and Prop 63

Youth Power posterWhat is Prop 63?

Prop 63 provides funding to expand mental health services for adults and children. This funding comes from a 1% tax on people who make over a million dollars a year. It is planned that Prop 63 will raise over $700 million dollars a year.

Who does the money go to?

Great ideas... No funds? Most of the MHSA money will be divided up among the counties in California. 20% of the money will go to toward prevention and early intervention for youth. There are currently very few programs that are designed to specifically meet the mental health needs of youth. With the new funding, the ideas of youth can be implemented in programs and not be ignored.

What are some opportunities for youth?

Prop 63 gives power to each county to design new mental health services. Those services include programs for youth. The planning process needs youth voice in order to deliver services that are exactly what the youth wants and needs.

What is a Stakeholder?

A stakeholder is a person or an organization that feels they have an active interest in the outcome of an issue or topic. Stakeholders could be: clients, family members, mental health providers, schools, social services, and many more. It is important for youth to be stakeholders in order to make sure that the system better meets the needs of youth.

How can I get involved?

To get information about MHSA visit the department of mental health website: http://www.dmh.ca.gov/MHSA/default.asp

On the website you will find information about meetings and trainings to attend. We need youth voice to advocate for what the youth needs and not what the adults think we need.  If you have questions contact: Alexxa Goodenough; Phone #: (916) 557-1165 or e-mail: agoodenough@mhac.org
